StartSmart Greece 2016: Morning Sessions
Dr. Leslie Dewan, Co-founder & CEO, Transatomic Power
“The Road from Inspiration to Commercialization“
Leslie Dewan founded Transatomic Power, a nuclear reactor design company, with a fellow grad student while they were completing their PhDs in Nuclear Engineering at MIT. Transatomic is developing a reactor that can consume nuclear waste, reducing its radioactive lifetime while generating carbon-free electricity. The two co-founders were inspired by the optimism and inventiveness of the early days of nuclear energy in the 1950s and 1960s, and sought to adapt one of the earliest nuclear reactor designs to make it well-suited for modern applications. This session sets the stage for a deeper dive into the technology and its cross industry implications in the afternoon workshop.
-Bridging the 40+ year gap in nuclear energy research: early drawbacks and challenges that impacted an industry.
-From 1960s prototype to 21st century technology.
-Advancements in computer simulation and material sciences that made Transatomic possible.
-Building a technology-first company.
-Finding the right type of investors: a story of unlikely partners.
