I want to ask you a question, “Who are you?” You will not think of your origin, religion or family, but you will think about what you have lived and accomplished. Yes, you have managed to overcome the obstacles in your life, but there are so many people who did not succeed. The obstacles turned into fears, which haunt them every day. ΑΓΩ is a virtual reality system that simulates phobias so people can learn easily and safely how to deal with their phobias and then overcome them!
Phobias are a psychiatric illness that 1 in 5 US citizens have. Only a small percentage of them follow treatment. Some reasons are: patients do not admit they suffer from phobia, current treatments are usually long-lasting, without clear results only focusing on discussion or on temperamental exercises. But lately some proposals have focused on how the patient can learn to act in a normal manner. No such proposal has yet been implemented because no technology simulates such treatment.
ΑΓΩ aims to teach the patients the skills and self-confidence, with which they will be able to control their phobias at will and effortlessly, having the belief that they can do it! This is achieved by combining two technologies: Virtual Reality goggles (output) and Motion Recognition Camera (input). VR simulates various phobic situations. MRC records the patient’s movements, “places” his physical body in the virtual environment and checks whether the exercises are performed correctly.
